Beach Fleet Maintenance Committee

The Viking Sailing Club boat yard

They need your TLC!

The Vikings are looking for some help with our beach fleet!

The Executive Committee is calling on members to volunteer to help with with the beach fleet over the winter and next year. We’re missing a Rear Commodore this year (which holds overall responsibility for the beach fleet), so we’re re-forming the beach fleet maintenance committee.

Roles

We are seeking five to six volunteers to fulfil the following roles. If you’re not sure what role you’d like but want to help, contact us anyway.

  • Clubroom – lead cleanup and prep of the club room
  • Tasar – lead ongoing maintenance of the Tasars – preferable two volunteers
  • Lasers – lead ongoing maintenance of the Lasers
  • Catamaran – lead ongoing maintenance of the catamarans
  • Chair
  • General committee member

Qualifications

  • While some technical knowledge would be helpful, it is expected that there will be a mix of experience and skills. Any rating is welcome.
  • A lot of the work is organizing, so if you like making lists that’s a good skill to have, too!

Expectations

You should be willing to commit to:

  • Sticking with the committee through to the end of the sailing season
  • Being present at Jericho on a reasonably regular basis to keep an eye on the status of the fleet
  • Helping other members carry out maintenance activities

How You’ll Benefit

  • While we’d like members with some technical aptitude, you’ll get a chance to learn as you go. If you’d ever wanted improve your knowledge and comfort with boat maintenance, this is the way to do it.
  • Volunteering is a great way to meet to members — all the more people to sail with.
  • You’ll be helping your club. The sense of satisfaction! As you all know we’re a volunteer-run club, and we need everyone’s help to keep things running.

Winter To Do List

  • The fleet needs some maintenance. We’ll be either taking on some of the maintenance ourselves, or sourcing local experts to do the work. One of our primary goals over the winter are to repair the dagger boards and rudders, and return Sol shipshape condition.
  • Update the fleet. Our fleet plan calls for selling and buying of boats. We’ll need input into and help getting this done, especially in commissioning any new vessels in the spring.
  • Take stock of and update equipment and supplies in the club room, as well as complete a general cleanup.
